A night train from Tokyo to Hokkaido is its own small world. Each passenger settles in for a long, half-sleeping journey, and strangers slowly become familiar faces over the course of a few quiet hours.
Across the aisle from me sat a fellow traveler about my age. We exchanged a polite glance and then returned to our books — the first quiet encounter of the night. After an hour, hunger gave us an excuse to chat. The stranger turned out to share my fondness for old detective novels, and our tastes in coffee accidentally matched as well.
He had a fascinating perspective on life in the far north, having spent ten years working in a remote fishing town that I had only read about in magazines. As the train sped through dark fields, he told me brief stories of harsh winters and friendly neighbors. I asked him about his destination. He smiled and said he was on his way to surprise his elderly mother. The thought of the long journey, with such a kind purpose, amused and amazed me at once.
We did not approach any deep topic. We mostly let our minds wander between simple comments about the passing landscape, and the gaze of one passenger occasionally drifted to the dark window.
When the train finally stopped at our shared destination, we exchanged numbers, shook hands, and went our separate ways. A train compartment can occupy a strange middle ground — too brief for friendship, yet long enough for a small, quiet gift.
