第66章 形容詞の選び方

Naming Things Well: Choosing the Right Adjective

READING本文

Adjectives shape the way we describe the world. Saying a problem is “serious” or “likely” sounds quite different from saying it is merely “rough” or “general,” and the careful speaker chooses with a particular goal in mind.

Some adjectives are mainly about availability and readiness. A car may be available next month, ready to drive the moment it arrives, and in correct working order from the very first day on the road.

Familiar words have warmth that more elaborate ones can lack: a familiar face at the door, a typical Sunday meal, an appropriate gesture at a tense moment. These adjectives tell the listener what to expect.

Other adjectives mark quality directly. An excellent restaurant, an expensive painting, a complete recipe — each phrase suggests something specific about value, taste, and trust.

Even simple words carry weight. An entire town can be moved by a single piece of news. A male relative may quietly join the conversation; he may be upset by something that no one else has even noticed.

Adjectives also help with time and freshness. A recent event differs from an ancient one, and what is worth talking about today may turn out to be empty trivia tomorrow. For a beginner, sticking to general adjectives is both practical and safe. As skill grows, the writer slowly learns to use more colorful options without losing clarity or coming across as showy.

In daily life, picking the right adjective is its own quiet art. The careful speaker chooses the appropriate word for each particular occasion, and a clumsy choice can leave a listener confused, mildly amused, or even quite upset.

形容詞は、私たちが世界を描写する仕方を形づくる。問題を「serious(深刻だ)」とか「likely(ありそうだ)」と言うのは、ただ「rough(おおざっぱだ)」とか「general(一般的だ)」と言うのとはかなり異なって聞こえ、注意深い話し手はある特定の目的を念頭に選んでいる。形容詞の中には、主に利用可能性や準備状態に関わるものがある。車は「available(利用できる)」のは来月で、届いた瞬間に「ready(運転する用意ができている)」、そして道路に出る初日から「correct(正しく)」動く状態にある、ということもある。

「recent(最近の)」出来事は「ancient(古代の)」出来事とは異なり、今日「worth(〜の価値がある)」話題になることが、明日には中身の「empty(空っぽの)」噂にすぎないと判明することもある。

初心者にとって、「general(一般的な)」形容詞にとどまることは、「practical(実用的)」でもあり、安全でもある。技術が伸びるにつれて、書き手は、明晰さを失ったり、ひけらかしているように映ったりせずに、より色彩豊かな選択肢を少しずつ使えるようになる。日常生活では、ふさわしい形容詞を選ぶことそのものが一つの静かな技芸である。注意深い話し手はその場その場で「appropriate(ふさわしい)」語を選び、不器用な選択は聞き手を混乱させ、軽く面白がらせ、あるいはかなり「upset(気を悪くさせる)」ことすらある。
