Linking the Lines: Connectives and Subtle Nuances

READING本文

Good writing depends on small connecting words. “Therefore,” “unlike,” and “besides” each direct the reader's thought in a particular way, and the careful writer uses them as a builder uses different kinds of mortar.

A skilled essay moves smoothly. We say one thing, and then we move beyond it to a fresh point. The argument lies within the carefully chosen words, never far above or below them.

Some words come in pairs. “Neither this nor that” is one example, and “unless” creates a quiet condition: I will go to the party, unless the weather turns truly terrible.

We use “except” to mark an exception to a general statement, and “whether” to introduce a question that may go either way. A statement may be true on the surface but quite false beneath it.

“Whereas” contrasts two related ideas, especially useful when comparing the former part of an essay with the latter. Two seemingly identical sentences may, in context, mean entirely opposite things.

Time markers also help readers follow an argument. “Afterward” signals what comes next; “nearly” means not quite reaching a goal; and an event “contrary” to expectation forces the reader to slow down and think.

A wise writer may resist the temptation to over-explain. He must virtually disappear from his own prose, letting the facts speak for themselves and trusting the reader to understand.

Yet good style can also tempt the reader to think harder. Somewhat longer sentences, used sparingly, slow the eye and quietly demand attention from a reader who would otherwise hurry past the most important sentence on the page.

「therefore(したがって)」「unlike(〜と違って)」「besides(〜に加えて)」はいずれも、読み手の思考を特定の方向へと導き、慎重な書き手はそれらを、職人が異なる種類のモルタルを使うように用いる。

「neither this nor that(これでもあれでもない)」はその一例であり、「unless ――(〜でない限り)」は静かに条件を作り出す。

「whereas(〜であるのに対し)」は二つの関連する考えを対比させる。
