By the Numbers: Measurement in Modern Research

READING本文

Modern science measures almost everything. A single careful experiment may take a whole decade to complete, and the results often arrive in tables of cold numbers rather than dramatic discoveries.

A precise temperature reading, a survey covering one billion data points, even the careful proportion of one chemical to another — all are recorded in standard units that anyone in the field can immediately understand.

A unit of measurement must be exact. The volume of a container, for example, is not the same as its weight, and confusing the two has, in the past, caused real disasters in industry and shipping.

A clear poll of public opinion is, in some ways, the equivalent of a quarter of true scientific research. Each finding must be treated with caution, because every survey carries its own quiet strain on the underlying data.

Two parallel lines, mathematicians remind us, never meet. The same rule, in its way, applies to honest scholarship: the line of argument and the line of evidence must run together but never quietly merge into one.

Researchers proceed with great patience. Their work somewhat resembles that of a surgeon who must keep an unsteady hand from a sudden rage that could damage delicate tissue beyond repair in a single careless second.

A public inquiry sometimes reveals a thin strip of unfortunate truth. A stroke of bad luck, or an undiagnosed disability in one of the staff, may quietly explain why an important project failed despite excellent funding.

A scholar's faculty for clear thinking is sharpened by years of patient inquiry. Honest measurement, simple as it sounds, is the basis of every reliable answer that any modern discipline has ever provided.
