第60章　都市の多様な顔

A great city is one of the most overwhelming spectacles of modern life. Walk through any large metropolis at lunchtime and you encounter an incredible variety of people — racial, social, and generational. Within a single block, ten languages may be spoken at once.

Such diversity is not always easy to live with. Even in the most up-to-date cities, complaints about noise, traffic, and the daily challenges of complicated public transport remain widespread, and no mayor has ever fully solved them. Most city dwellers behave largely with quiet good manners. They greet a neighbor politely on the elevator, mostly avoid eye contact on the crowded train, and share narrow sidewalks without much complaint.

A small minority, however, prefer to be openly rude, and a tiny aggressive group can sometimes turn an evening into something far less pleasant. Such cruel behavior fortunately remains a minor exception, not the daily rule.

People who grew up in rural villages often feel slightly ignorant of city ways at first, while urban veterans may quietly forget how much sky and silence the open countryside offers to those who learned to listen there.

At the core of every city's appeal is its endless social mixing. An office worker may sit beside a deaf retiree at a free concert, and a curious child may peer with wonder at an old craftsman patiently repairing a broken bicycle on the sidewalk. Many residents become deeply involved in their neighborhood's small struggles — a community garden, an aging school, a fantastic local restaurant fighting to stay open in spite of rising rents and changing tastes.

Living well in a complicated city, in the end, is mostly about practice. The largely invisible network of polite habits, kind small actions, and patient daily routines is what keeps millions of strangers living side by side in something like peace.
