A home is something more than four walls and a roof. It is the stage on which our domestic life — meals, arguments, laughter, sleep — quietly unfolds, year after year, often without our really noticing.
Most adults eventually choose a place to live. Some buy a piece of property of their own; others rent an apartment in a city they have not yet settled in for good. A long- term resident of any neighborhood gradually comes to feel its rhythms in the bones. Step inside any home and you will find pieces of furniture chosen carefully or inherited unexpectedly: a heavy table, a worn sofa, a bookcase that always tilts a little to one side. Around them, a great deal of stuff slowly accumulates, much of which the owner could not now imagine throwing away.
Daily life means daily work. Someone must sweep the floor, wipe the kitchen surfaces, and fold the clothes that came out of the dryer this morning. Such tasks may sound small, but a home in which no one cares for them quickly becomes uncomfortable to live in.
Sooner or later, something breaks. A tap drips, a chair leg snaps, an old curtain begins to tear at the seam. In winter, the water in a forgotten pipe may freeze and crack. A patient resident learns the basic skills to repair small problems before they grow into big ones.
Most houses include both shared and private spaces. The kitchen and the living room are common areas, used by every member of the household, while a bedroom remains the most private corner of all, where each person can finally close the door on the world.
Within every house there are small objects that the family quietly treasures: a child's first drawing, a wedding photograph, a letter from a friend who is no longer alive. We do not really possess such things; rather, they hold us, and locate us in our own story.
Time, however, passes. Children grow and move out; older parents may decide it is time to divide their property among the next generation, or to move into a smaller place. Yet wherever they go, the memory of the old home travels with them, more lasting than any of the furniture left behind.

ほとんどの大人は、やがて住む場所を選ぶ。自分の所有物として家を買う人もいれば、まだ落ち着くと決めていない街にアパートを借りる人もいる。どのような地域でも、長く暮らす住民は次第にその街のリズムを骨身で感じるようになる。
どの家に一歩入っても、慎重に選ばれた家具、あるいは思いがけず受け継いだ家具が見つかる。重いテーブル、すり減ったソファ、いつもどこか片側に少し傾いている本棚。それらの周りに、捨てるなど今や考えられないものを多く含む、たくさんの「もの」がゆっくりと積もっていく。日常の暮らしは、日常の労働を意味する。誰かが床を掃き、台所の表面を拭き、今朝乾燥機から出てきた衣類をたたまなければならない。こうした仕事は些細に聞こえるかもしれないが、誰もそれを気にかけない家は、すぐに住み心地が悪くなる。
遅かれ早かれ、何かが壊れる。蛇口がしずくを垂らし、椅子の脚が折れ、古いカーテンが縫い目から裂け始める。冬には、忘れ去られた配管の水が凍って割れることもある。忍耐強い住民は、小さな問題が大きくなる前に自分で直す基本的な技術を身につけていく。ほとんどの家には、共有の空間と私的な空間の両方が含まれる。台所と居間は、家庭の全員が使う共通の場所であり、一方で寝室はすべての中で最も私的な一角であり続ける。そこでようやく、一人ひとりが世界に向かって扉を閉じることができる。
どの家の中にも、家族が静かに大切にしている小さな物がある。子どもが初めて描いた絵、結婚式の写真、もうこの世にはいない友からの手紙などである。私たちは本当にそうしたものを所有しているのではない。むしろ、それらが私たちを抱きとめ、私たち自身の物語の中に位置づけてくれるのである。
しかし時間はたつ。子どもは成長して家を出て、年老いた親は、財産を次の世代へ分け与えるとき、あるいはより小さな住まいへ移るときが来たと判断するかもしれない。それでも、どこへ行こうとも、古い家の記憶は彼らとともに旅をしていく。あとに残されたいかなる家具よりも、長く残り続けるのだ。
