Almost every adult, at some point, must decide whether to marry, and many of those who do later have to wrestle with the painful possibility of divorce. Behind such decisions lies a simple human truth: most people deeply want a life-long companion. Children, in turn, transform an ordinary couple into a family. The arrival of a twin pair can change a household overnight, and even a single child quickly shows a characteristic style of laughing, crying, and reacting to the world. Many of these traits are clearly inherited from parents, or even from a distant relative whom the child has never met.
To raise a young person well is one of the most demanding jobs in the world. Childhood passes quickly, and the difficult years of youth are sometimes very tough. The adolescent years, in particular, can confuse both the youngster going through them and the adults trying to help.
Most parents try to offer proper guidance, but they soon discover that there is no perfect manual. A wise mother or father tends to be modest about their own achievements, and welcomes the help of relatives, neighbors, and friends. No single family is an island.
Brothers and sisters are often surprisingly alike in some ways, yet wonderfully different in others. The expectations placed on a child once depended heavily on gender; today, families allow much more freedom in how a boy or a girl chooses to live.
A lively home is full of small daily rituals — shared meals, evening stories, weekend games. A child raised in such an environment quickly becomes accustomed to the comfort of routine, and carries that sense of safety into adult life. Parents, of course, are not the only teachers in a child's life. Yet they remain the principal model: the way they treat each other as mates, friends, and partners gradually teaches their children what love and respect look like in practice. There is no perfect family. Some are large and noisy; some are quiet; some are single-parent; some are blended. Yet within every kind of family, the same hopes appear again and again: that children will grow up loved, that adults will find a true companion, and that the bonds between them will last.
