Standing on Shoulders: How Knowledge Grows

READING本文

From the very earliest days of human history, we have been a curious species. Hunters wanted to know where the animals would go; farmers wanted to know when the rains would come; and quietly, generation after generation, we built up the knowledge on which modern science now stands.

Today, scientific research is carried out as a careful project. A team of researchers begins with a clear question, designs experiments to test it, and then sits down for the patient analysis of the data that those experiments produce. Without that final step, even the most exciting result means little.

Important findings do not simply belong to the team that obtained them. Other scientists must review the work, repeat the experiments where possible, and refine the original ideas. Knowledge is in this sense always a shared possession, never the property of a single thinker.

Modern problems are far too complex for any one person to master. Researchers must specialize, devoting many years to a single narrow field. A medical doctor may study only one type of cancer, and a chemist may spend a lifetime on a single class of molecules.

Yet specialization has its limits. The scope of a really interesting problem often reaches across many disciplines at once, and a true breakthrough sometimes appears only when a biologist, a physicist, and an engineer compare notes. No single field is wide enough by itself.

International conferences play an essential role. When scholars from different countries gather to discuss their latest findings, the resulting conversations can stimulate new ideas in ways that no individual lecture, however brilliant, ever could. Personal contact is still irreplaceable.

Every great career begins quietly. A young professor patiently undertakes one careful study after another, using more and more sophisticated instruments, learning to comprehend her chosen field more thoroughly with each passing year. The work is slow, but it is genuinely cumulative.

Knowledge, then, grows through a long sequence of small steps. The function of the modern university is to keep that sequence alive, to train students who remain curious, and to prove, year after year, that human understanding is still expanding. The future of learning rests in their hands.
