Born or Made? The Science Behind Great Athletes

READING本文

When we watch a great athlete win an Olympic medal, it is easy to believe that he or she was simply born with extraordinary ability. We imagine that such people are a different kind of human being. Modern sports science, however, tells a more encouraging story.

Researchers have found that the ability to perform at the highest level is built far more by training than by birth. Natural gifts certainly help, but the skill that separates a champion from an ordinary player is the result of thousands of hours of careful, intelligent practice. Even raw talent must be developed. That practice is now guided by science. Trainers study how the body builds strength, how an athlete should manage body weight, and how a single movement can be made more efficient. Nothing is left to chance, and every detail is measured and recorded. Of course, sport is also about competition. Athletes compete fiercely, working to score more points than a determined opponent. The pressure of an important match can be enormous, and learning to deal with that pressure is itself a vital part of training.

The physical demands are severe. Athletes must endure long hours of exhausting practice, and they often struggle through pain and tiredness. There is always a danger that they will injure themselves, so coaches now plan rest as carefully as they plan exercise.

A good coach does much more than shout from the side of the field. He or she gives clear instruction, helps the athlete attempt new techniques, and measures small signs of progress that the athlete alone might never notice.

Science cannot supply one thing, however: the athlete's motive. Each person must understand why he or she is willing to train so hard. For some the reward is a medal; for others it is simply the deep satisfaction of doing one's very best. In the end, sports science and human determination work together. With good training, steady confidence, and expert instruction, ordinary young people can learn to manage stress, avoid serious injury, and improve far beyond what they once believed possible.
