The Web of Life: Protecting Wildlife and Biodiversity

READING本文

Our planet is home to a remarkable number of living things. Scientists have already identified numerous species, from microscopic organisms invisible to the eye to enormous mammals such as whales and elephants. Every one of these creatures, large or small, plays some role in the natural world.

Each species survives within a particular habitat, the special environment to which it is suited. Some animals can live almost anywhere, but many cannot. The tropical rainforests near the equator, for example, contain an extraordinary variety of wildlife found in no other place on Earth.

Within every habitat, living things are connected in a delicate ecological balance. Predators hunt their prey, and prey animals survive by speed, by hiding, or by an instinct that warns them of danger. If even one part of this system is removed, the effects can spread in surprising ways.

Human activity, however, increasingly threatens this balance. As cities and farms expand, natural habitats diminish year after year. Many animals that were once common have become rare, and a growing number of species are now seriously endangered.

When a forest is cut down, the animals that lived there do not simply move next door. They scatter in every direction, often into areas where there is too little food or too much danger. Unable to find safe homes, many fail to breed, and their numbers fall sharply within a single generation.

The process of evolution, which allows living things to adapt to their surroundings, is extremely slow. It usually requires thousands of years. Modern environmental change, by contrast, happens within decades. Most species simply cannot evolve quickly enough to survive the new conditions that humans have created. For this reason, conservation has become urgent. Around the world, governments now protect important habitats as national parks, and scientists run special programs to breed endangered animals safely. Such efforts have already saved several species that would otherwise have disappeared completely.

It is easy to think that the fate of a single rare creature does not matter. Yet the web of life is delicate, and every organism is connected to many others. By protecting wildlife and the habitats they depend on, we are, in the end, also protecting the natural systems that human beings need to survive.
