Deciding and Doing: How Choices Become Actions

READING本文

Every adult must determine, at many moments of life, what kind of person to be. The first such decisions are made almost without our notice, and yet they slowly set the shape of every later choice.

To solve a problem is harder than to avoid it. Yet quiet avoidance only postpones a real answer, and the same difficulty often returns, larger and more confusing than before.

A wise teacher sometimes substitutes one approach for another; she may even reverse her usual style entirely if a new student seems hopelessly lost in the standard lesson.

To impose a rule on someone else is easy; to follow it oneself is far harder. We often attribute our own failures to circumstance and our successes to skill, even when the truth is roughly the opposite.

A careful speaker does not imply what she will not openly say. She does not confine her thoughts to a single line of argument, and she does not assemble her reasons in a way designed to provoke an angry response.

A craftsman may assemble a complex object piece by piece. A teacher may carefully cite the works of those who came before, never skipping over an inconvenient source merely because it conflicts with her own view.

Two events sometimes coincide perfectly. A sudden recession may bind two old rivals together for a single difficult year, or it may provoke a fresh quarrel that no one had imagined the week before.

A good plan does not shrink before difficulty. It comprises many smaller steps; it allows the planner to indulge in optimism only after the careful work is done. A serious goal can penetrate every part of life. Honest effort, in the end, constitutes the real foundation of every lasting success.

問題を「solve(解決する)」ことは、それを「avoid(避ける)」よりも難しい。

賢い教師は、ときに一つのやり方を別のものに「substitute(置き換える)」。

彼女は自分の思考を一本の論証の線に「confine(閉じ込める)」こともしないし、怒りの反応を「provoke(誘発する)」ために理由を「assemble(組み立てる)」こともしない。職人は複雑な物を一つひとつ「assemble(組み立てる)」かもしれない。

二つの出来事が完璧に「coincide(同時に起こる)」こともある。 よい計画は困難の前に「shrink(縮こまる)」ことはない。それは数多くの小さな段階を「comprise(構成する)」する。 真剣な目標は生活のあらゆる部分に「penetrate(浸透する)」しうる。
