From Atoms to Apes: The Long Story of Life

READING本文

The origin of life on Earth remains one of the deepest mysteries in science. Almost four billion years ago, in some warm shallow sea, the first true biological cell appears to have emerged from a soup of simple chemicals. Everything alive today descends from that single quiet event.

From the start, the basis of life was a small set of organic molecules. They combined, fell apart, and recombined according to no fixed formula written in advance. Yet, over many millions of years, the result was a steadily growing complexity that we are still trying to understand.

Slowly, the first cells learned to reproduce, splitting into copies of themselves. Once a population could multiply, evolution had its raw material. From single cells, by ways that scientists can still only partly explain, plants, fishes, dinosaurs, and finally our own ancestors all emerged.

Dinosaurs once ruled the Earth, dominating the land for over a hundred million years before they ceased to exist almost overnight. The ape line, by contrast, is much younger, and the modern human species is younger still — a recent and almost accidental arrival on a very old stage.

Within every living body, the gene is the basic unit of inheritance. Eggs hatch, plants soak up water from the soil, and every new generation begins to grow by reading the silent instructions written in its parents' genes. Even tiny changes can lead, over time, to entirely new species.

Physical processes shape life as much as biology does. Ice slowly melts in the sun, salt dissolves into the sea, and the wind carries seeds across continents. Without these constant changes the chemical conditions for life could never have arisen in the first place.

Scientists today try to calculate exactly how all of this works. They modify a single gene in the laboratory and watch the result, or compute the smallest formula that links one molecule to another. Each experiment slightly increases what we know about the strange machine called a living organism.

And yet the deepest questions remain open. We can describe how cells divide, but we still cannot fully say what makes a body alive at all. As long as such mysteries exist, biology will not cease to fascinate even the youngest student who first looks down a microscope.
