Hidden Wounds: Bullying in Childhood

READING本文

Bullying is one of the most painful experiences a young person can have. It can begin almost invisibly — a single whispered insult, a sharp laugh aimed at a quiet kid in the corner of the classroom — and yet within a few weeks it can poison every part of a child's daily life.

Bullies often choose targets who are different in some small way: a child who is unusually shy, or socially awkward, or simply new to the school. They may invent ridiculous nicknames, mock the victim's clothes or voice, and emphasize anything that sets the child apart from the group.

For a long time, many adults chose to ignore the problem, or to neglect it as ordinary play. They scarcely seemed to notice the daily cruelty going on under their own eyes. Today most teachers understand that this kind of silence does enormous harm. The damage to the victim is deep. Children who are bullied for months often begin to believe that the cruel words are true, and that it is somehow their own fault. In the worst cases, the result is anxiety, depression, or even something far darker. It is important to remember that bullying is not a normal stage of growing up. It is, fundamentally, a selfish act, and the right response is to blame the person who does the harm, not to blame the victim for being weak. No child should be told to “just get used to it.”

Good schools work hard to prevent the problem. Teachers regularly emphasize that every student is welcome, and they make it clear that even small unkind acts will be taken seriously. A culture in which kindness is normal is the best defense against bullying.

Yet rules alone are not enough. A child who has hurt another should be guided to apologize honestly, to accept that the action was a real mistake, and to think about what was lost. The point is not punishment but understanding.

Victims, in turn, must be clearly informed that they can complain to a trusted adult at any time. A parent or teacher who hears such a complaint must never annoy the child with disbelief. To be heard, and to be believed, is often the first step toward healing.
