第43章　自動車と運転

Few inventions have reshaped daily life as much as the automobile. Every morning, millions of cars roll out onto streets and highways, and the steady sound of their wheels has become part of the music of every modern city.

Behind the front wheel of each vehicle sits a driver, ready to steer it through traffic. Older cars used a manual gearshift that required real attention; newer models do almost everything for the driver, and are equipped with sensors that watch the road in every direction.

Yet, even with such help, accidents still happen. A driver may accidentally turn into the wrong lane, or fail to notice a child running into the street. A serious crash, in the worst cases, leaves both the car and the people inside it badly broken. Heavy trucks are a story of their own. They must load goods at a factory, descend long mountain roads, and bend carefully around sharp curves. Even a moment's rush at the wrong place can send a great vehicle out of control.

Most drivers learn to react instantly to danger. They press the brake, shift the gears, or pull the wheel hard to one side. In a moment when a row of cars suddenly slows, only the quickest reactions can prevent a chain accident.

Roads themselves speak to drivers through signs. Travelers see one sign after another, frequently changing speed limits, warnings, and arrows. When a highway splits into two, a single moment of confusion can take the driver many kilometers in the wrong direction.

Eventually, every car needs serious service. A trained mechanic checks each part, replaces what is worn out, and attaches new components. Without such regular care, even a beautiful vehicle will sooner or later refuse to start.

What does the future hold? Some companies are already testing cars that drive themselves, while others dream of vehicles that fly. The shape of the wheel may change, but the basic human wish — to travel quickly and safely from one place to another — is unlikely to fade.
