The Heart's Language: Emotions and Human Relationships

READING本文

Human beings are deeply emotional creatures. From the first cry of a baby to the quiet thoughts of old age, our lives are colored by feeling. Moments of delight and moments of sorrow, in turn, shape who we are.

Some emotions are pleasant and easy to welcome. The warm feeling of a sunny morning, a joke that amuses us, or an afternoon spent with people we are fond of can fill an ordinary day with quiet happiness.

Other emotions are far harder to bear. When our plans fail or our hopes are crushed, we may feel miserable, and a long period of distress can frustrate even the most patient person. Learning to live with such feelings is one of life's great tasks. Most of our strongest emotions arise from our relationships with others. The deep affection between members of a family, and the comfort of an intimate friendship built on years of trust, are among the most valuable things a person can have. Yet the same relationships can also cause pain. We may secretly envy a friend's success, or feel embarrassed by a careless word. A sharp remark, spoken in anger when someone loses their temper, can hurt another person for a very long time. This is why honesty matters so much. A friendship survives only when both people show genuine feeling and keep the faith they have placed in each other. Trust, once badly broken, is extremely difficult to rebuild.

How, then, should we handle our emotions? Psychologists agree that the answer is not to hide them. A person who never admits to sadness will not truly be happy either. It is far healthier to understand our feelings, and to let friends cheer us when our spirits are low.

In the end, the desire to connect with others lies at the very center of human life. Emotions, both the joyful and the painful, are not a weakness. They are the rich and necessary signs that we are fully, warmly alive.
